“Welcome the Stranger” at Martinski Fine Arts

Welcome the Stranger — The title postulates not only hospitality to strangers but concurrently implies something more alien or, perhaps, even disconcerting: to welcome. For that, the Puttbill Parables have no intention beyond that of being their own personal cosmos of pictorial storytelling.

Indeed, the occurrences captured in the frozen “snap-shot” moments of the depicted scenes do not lend themselves to effortless construal. Wherever the common motive, visual citation or symbol proffers the most rudimentary interpretation, there is something that disrupts the given initial association, something that reroutes it or turns it upside-down. There where contradistinctive scenarios and requisites — the known and the foreign, the fictive and the real — collide, the key to interpretation appears to lie hidden.

Felix Pestemer’s gouache drawings, indebted to the genre of Magic Realism, are on exhibit from 12 April 2008 to 16 May 2008 at Martinski Fine Arts in Berlin-Kreuzberg, Gneisenaustraße 64. The finissage is the same day as the Karneval der Kulturen on Whit Sunday, 11 April 2008, from 5PM to 7PM
