“The ‘Shroud of Neukölln’ is irritating and eerie. In Felix Pestemer’s work, cult figures from horror movies, comics and fairy-tales are transformed into a world of impermanence.” This is how “Kulturzeit” on the channel 3Sat described the drawings in a feature on the Illustrative 08 in Zurich.
From mythological creatures to pre-historic animals to contemporary comic figures; animated objects from history, art and literature as well as from adventure, horror and trash movies. A lot of these monsters are prominent in our collective memory and per se they symbolize the end of civilisation. But in the “Shroud of Neukölln”, every single one of them is fated for the same end: Just one among one hundred endangered beasts, they’re about to be devoured by something that is much larger and more powerful than themselves.
